As a follow up to my article in the May 2024 Village View, I had more questions for Deputy Executive Director of Lenox Health Greenwich Village (LHGV), Tracy Feiertag, MS, DHA. Here’s what she had to say about the White Building at 30 7th Avenue which also houses an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) .
What exactly is ambulatory, outpatient or same day surgery?
These are all interchangeable terms for surgeries that do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. Typically, after an ambulatory procedure, patients are carefully monitored for a few hours in the recovery area before they are discharged home the same day. This type of surgery is often less invasive and allows patients to comfortably recover at home. Our ambulatory surgery center, which opened in May 2021, is located on the fourth of floor of LHGV.
What do you want our community to know about LHGV Ambulatory Surgery Center?
We are a world-class facility offering a wide array of same day procedures. Our facility features four advanced operating rooms and two brand new procedure rooms. We also have a tranquil patient recovery area, an efficient pre-surgical testing suite, and a comfortable waiting room.
Our nurturing staff and accomplished physicians are deeply committed to ensuring patient comfort and safety and to delivering the highest quality of care. The multidisciplinary care teams work seamlessly together to optimize patient experience and alleviate stress. Every patient is closely monitored to ensure an optimal outcome. The ASC is also equipped with vital emergency equipment should an urgent situation arise.
It’s no secret that patients are most comfortable recuperating at home and our care team goes above and beyond to ensure a quick and smooth recovery once an individual leaves our facility. Our location in the heart of the West Village means that most of our patients can be back home with loved ones within a matter of hours.
What services and procedures are offered?
We offer services in the following clinical specialties: Orthopedics, Spine, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat), Gastroenterology, Pain Management and Podiatry. We offer minimally invasive joint procedures for the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, and wrist, as well as minimally invasive hand and foot surgery. In addition, we perform joint replacements and spine procedures, and treat a variety of athletic injuries. We also perform endoscopies and colonoscopies.
Do you have any interesting statistics?
We recently hit our highest operating room monthly volume since the opening of the ASC and we saw 480 patients in April 2024.
What innovative services are available now and in the future?
In January, we performed our first cardioversion case—a procedure to return an abnormal heartbeat to a normal rhythm. We will be expanding our cardiology services and we’re excited for our Cardiac Cath Lab to open in 2025.
How does LHGV stand out from other health care facilities in NYC?
Our surgeons and physicians are all board-certified and many are fellowship trained. In addition, our facility has received the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (which reflects the highest standard of nursing professionalism and patient care). We are also proud to be named a leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare equality by the Human Rights Campaign.
When it comes specifically to our ASC, we prioritize increased efficiency and this translates into shorter wait times. This allows the surgery center to maximize our operating rooms and in return our surgeons are able to see a higher volume of patients more efficiently. We are able to offer a more predictable and reliable schedule compared to many other facilities. This leads to a more enhanced experience for our patients and their family members.
