Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn to Perform at Greenwich House
From the Critics:
“41/2*… Echo in the Valley is to bluegrass as Charlie Parker was to New Orleans in the ’20s: respectful of its roots, untethered in its ambitions and triumphant in bringing it all together.” —Downbeat
”Fleck & Washburn have the ability to transform the music to a level that speaks directly to the soul. Echo in the Valley is full of beautiful playing, singing and interesting songs. It magical to hear the mixture of sound coming from the various banjos and all the different styles and rhythms involved in album. Echo in the Valley will keep you totally interested every second of every song.” —Sylvannia Garutch, Elmore Magazine
Grammy-winning artists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn are set to take the stage for an intimate performance at the historic Greenwich House Theater on Monday, June 5, 2023.
The banjo-playing duo, renowned for their incredible performances and innovative sound, are performing to benefit Greenwich House Music School, a 118-year-old community music school. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with a rooftop reception, the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to run for approximately 45 minutes. Event sponsors will enjoy a meet and greet with the artists following the concert.
“We are thrilled to welcome Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn to our 2023 benefit concert,” said Rachel Black, Director of Greenwich House Music School. Béla Fleck is a 16-time Grammy Award-winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds.
“Their music is beautiful and magnetic. We know that our audience will be in for a truly special evening,” said Black.
On stage, Fleck & Washburn will perform pieces from their Grammy-winning self-titled debut as well as their new record, Echo in the Valley (2017). With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling the noble instrument from its most familiar arena into new and unique realms, Béla and Abigail meet in the mean, head-on, to present music that feels wildly innovative and familiar at the same time.
