SCENE FROM THE STREET

The Honor of Co-naming Streets

Text and photos by Brian J Pape, AIA

We may recognize names like Jacqueline Onassis and David Dinkins or entertainment greats like Humphrey Bogart, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Cicely Tyson, Count Basie and Al Jolson. All have been honored with streets or places in Manhattan co-named for them. Let’s explore people in Greenwich Village who have been so honored. Designations are from the website nycstreets.info/honorstreets.info . Look for the green street signs below the street names.

At the northeast corner of Sullivan Street and Bleecker Street, the Honoree is Nicholas Pekearo, who was also tragically killed in the line of duty on March 14, 2007. He was an Auxiliary Police Officer in the Sixth Precinct for four years.  Aux. P.O. Nicholas Pekearo Corner was designated in 2008.

At the southwest corner of Sullivan Street and Bleecker Street, the Honoree is Eugene Marshalik, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 14, 2007. He was an Auxiliary Police Officer in the Sixth Precinct for just over a year. A native of Russia, he was attending New York University while aspiring to attend law school and become a prosecutor or an F.B.I. Agent. Aux. P.O. Eugene Marshalik Corner was designated in 2008.
