On August 24th, Integral Yoga Institute (IYI) in the West Village hosted a heartfelt Kirtan service titled “Sai Anantam,” led by Sita Michelle Coltrane, daughter of legendary jazz musicians A.C. TuriyaSangitananada (Turiya /Alice Coltrane) and John Coltrane. The service celebrated Turiya’s life and teachings, reflecting her profound influence on both music and spirituality.
Kirtan, a devotional practice deeply rooted in the Bhakti tradition, is a communal celebration that fosters a deep connection among participants. It involves the call-and-response chanting of sacred mantras, creating an atmosphere of unity and devotion. The attendees at Integral Yoga were immersed in the resonant sounds of harmoniums, tablas, and joyful voices, allowing them to transcend everyday concerns and experience spiritual upliftment. Sita Michelle Coltrane guided the gathering through an emotional journey, honoring her mother’s legacy while encouraging participants to engage fully in the musical experience.
The event was a tribute to Turiya’s contributions and a reminder of the deep ties her family shares with the West Village community. Understanding the importance of creating spaces for spiritual growth and community, she made significant financial and cultural contributions to ensure that the IYI could continue to expand its offerings and reach more people in the city. Her support helped the institute secure its foothold during a time of great cultural change, as yoga began to gain wider acceptance in the West, providing financial backing that helped secure the institute’s building.
Their commitment to spiritual exploration and community well-being aligned seamlessly with the Institute’s vision, making their contributions pivotal in fostering a welcoming space for seekers of all backgrounds. Notably, John Coltrane’s connection to the West Village is also reflected in his celebrated live album recorded at the Village Vanguard, further solidifying the family’s artistic legacy in the area.
The teachings of TuriyaSangitananada extend beyond her immediate circle, impacting countless lives through yoga and meditation. Integral Yoga has been a cornerstone of the West Village community for over five decades, providing a sanctuary for those seeking spiritual growth and wellness. They offer a range of classes, workshops, and events that draw participants from all walks of life.
