Village Preservation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of New York City’s Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo has long been a champion of maintaining the city’s unique history. One of their most beloved annual events is the Spring House Tour Benefit, a highly anticipated occasion that brings together history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and supporters from all over the world to explore some of the most iconic and beautifully preserved homes in the neighborhood.

The 2025 Spring House Tour Benefit (May 4, 2025) promises to be a special one, offering a rare glimpse into the interiors of private residences that reflect the rich history and spirit of the Village. The event not only highlights the architectural gems of the area but also raises crucial funds for Village Preservation’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the neighborhood’s heritage.

A Celebration of Historic Homes

The Spring House Tour is much more than a real estate tour; it’s a celebration of the unique history and charm that define the neighborhoods. Each year, a selection of private homes is chosen for their historic significance, architectural style, or their contribution to the cultural fabric of the area. Many of these homes date back to the early 19th century, showcasing the diverse architectural styles that have shaped the neighborhood, from Federalist and Greek Revival to the later Italianate and other related styles that are now synonymous with the Village.

Participants in the tour are able to explore these beautifully preserved homes up close, learning something about the fascinating stories behind them. From landmarked townhouses to hidden garden courtyards, the tour reveals the secrets and details that would otherwise remain behind closed doors. Many have been meticulously restored and offer a unique look at the blending of historic architecture with modern living.

Supporting Preservation Efforts

While the tour offers a chance to admire the aesthetics of the Village, its true purpose lies in supporting Village Preservation’s ongoing mission to protect and preserve the area’s historical landmarks and cultural spaces. Greenwich Village, like many parts of New York City, faces constant pressures from development and gentrification. Village Preservation works tirelessly to ensure that the charm and character of the area are not lost to the rapid pace of change.

Funds raised during the Spring House Tour Benefit go directly to the organization’s advocacy and preservation efforts, including advocating for landmark protections, researching the history of the neighborhood, and offering educational programs that teach the community about the importance of preservation. In addition, Village Preservation continues to fight for policies that protect both the historic architecture and the diverse cultural legacy of the Village. This year, Village Preservation was successful in securing landmark designation of 50 West 13th Street, an endangered 1846 house rich in Black history, women’s suffrage history, and theater history.

An Opportunity to Connect with the Community

In addition to the chance to explore the homes, the Spring House Tour Benefit fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among participants. Attendees come together not only to appreciate the rich history of the area but also to support a cause that helps preserve the identity of these beloved neighborhoods. The event is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, share stories about the history of the Village, and learn more about how the community can work together to preserve its future.

For those who wish to volunteer, Village Preservation offers the opportunity to become a docent in one of the homes on the day of the tour. In return, volunteers are given a complementary ticket to the tour. Contact Lily Gold at 212-475-9585 ext. 45 for more information.
