NYC Street Named For Jimi Hendrix
New York City’s West 8th Street has a new name in honor of one of the city’s myriad musical luminaries ─ Jimi Hendrix Way. An unveiling ceremony was held on June 10.
According to his sister Janie, getting her older brother’s name on the street … has been a long time coming. In fact, as she told the New York Times, her family started working towards the commemoration “soon after Jimi passed away” in 1970 at the age of 27. He lived on West 12th Street in the heart of the Village.
Jimi Hendrix Way sits just down the street from the guitarist’s legendary Electric Lady Studios where they once had a petition to ‘Name this street after Jimi.’ His sister said, “We also tried to get Jimi’s face on a stamp and that eventually happened 12 years ago. All in due time.”

Church of The Ascension Pantry
The local pantry at 12 West 11th Street, operated by Ascension Outreach, Inc., continues to serve after more than three decades! According to Rev. Edwin T. Chinery, associate rector, the program reaches about 1,000 individuals each month on the first and third Saturdays. Because 98% of the visitor population self identifies as mono-lingual in Chinese, program leadership has worked hard to ensure culturally
competent food choices are available.

Epstein and NYU
Epstein lied about earning an NYU mathematics degree. The convicted sex offender falsified his academic background — and decades later, the university has yet to publicly address his ties despite a congressional probe. Here’s some of what Krish Dev, digital director of Washington Square News wrote on May 14, 2026.
“In January, a House committee directed NYU to hand over all records related to Jeffrey Epstein, citing claims that the convicted sex offender lured victims by promising them admission to the university. While the request has not been publicly addressed, a WSN investigation found Epstein exaggerated his NYU education.
Epstein enrolled at NYU as a student without an undergraduate degree, took graduate-level classes at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and was sued by the university in 1975 after sending an invalid check to the Office of the Bursar, WSN’s analysis of files released by the Department of Justice indicated. NYU did not respond to requests for comment regarding its history with the financier.
Julie K. Brown, the Miami Herald investigative reporter whose Perversion of Justice series drew attention to the scope of Epstein’s crimes in 2018, said, “He mentions NYU an awful lot….The school should be transparent and evaluate exactly why he was doing that — it’s important to the NYU community.”
Epstein claimed to have received a Courant master’s degree on a 1976 employment and personal history form for the now-defunct investment bank Bear Stearns, where he began his career in finance. However, when the company requested Epstein’s records during a background check, Graduate School of Arts and Science Recording Office employee Mavis Lewis sent a letter confirming Epstein’s enrollment while noting that he did not graduate. “…..Jeffrey E. Epstein…was registered as a non-degree student in the Graduate School of Arts and Science, Department of Music, from September 1971 to May 1974,” Lewis wrote. “Mr. Epstein did not receive a degree from New York University.”
