On January 17, the People’s Voice Cafe in Greenwich Village became a space of reflection, connection, and moral urgency as Elijah Dixon Owens delivered a stirring tribute to the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Now that we’ve had our annual year-end showing of The Poseidon Adventure, we’re excited to begin 2026 here at Jefferson Market Library. Many people take the new year as a chance to start fresh and make some positive changes, so we came up with a few ideas for ways that we can help.
Hudson Park Library, a Greenwich Village landmark that first opened its doors on January 24, 1906, will celebrate its 120th anniversary with a special Community Night on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event marks more than a milestone, offering a lively, drop-in evening that reflects the library’s long-standing role as a cultural and creative gathering place.
Last month at Jefferson Market, we held two book discussions on Daniel Kehlmann’s recent novel, The Director, translated from German by Ross Benjamin.
We are thrilled to announce our new exhibit, Before We Had a Garden: An Archival History of the Women’s House of Detention Site, and What Came Before and After. This exhibit, up now through mid-December in our Little Underground Gallery, is the first of what we hope will be many sourced entirely from our library archive, and put together by us, your librarians.
Poets of Patchin Place was a unique event of musical settings of Village Poets. It was held at Salmagundi Arts Club on September 24 and was part of The Village Trip festival in collaboration with Welltone New Music, Cutting Edge Concerts, and The Coffee House Club.
Walking south in my Chelsea neighborhood along Seventh Avenue South, I swiftly passed the new Northwell Hospital without taking much notice on my way to the oldest jazz club in NYC, the Village Vanguard.
Each year at the end of October, hundreds of superheroes, villains, cartoon characters, and princesses flock to Washington Square Park for NYU and Manhattan Community Board 2’s Annual Children’s Halloween Parade. Filling the streets with laughter and excitement, the ghouls and goblins are in for a “spooktacular” treat as they line up under the iconic arch, parade around the park, and end at its south side, where an afternoon of activities awaits.
A local basketball team called the “City Hawks” (also known as the “Unified Banner Team”) just won gold at the Special Olympic games held at Queens College in June. This comes just six months after a New York Edge Beacon Program floor hockey team picked up silver.
