SCENES FROM THE STREET

This is a Crime and a Shame!

On the Hudson River Park esplanade is the beautiful bronze sculpture “Apple” (2000/01) by West Village artist Stephan Weiss (1938-2001). It includes a sitting platform and a ‘core’ cut-out, making it a wonderful climbing adventure for children. On our June 19 walk, we were shocked to find that some wanton punk had defaced this public art with crude spray paint. Truly disgusting disrespect. It is not just a shame, it is a crime.

The bronze plaque states, “Dedicated by the artist to the city of New York and to the neighbors and neighborhood of the Far West Village that filled his heart.” May he rest in peace.
