The Retail Impact of a Car-Free 14th Street

Jan, 2023 | Neighborhood, Scenes From the Street

These photos were taken on one block, 14th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, on Christmas Day, 2022. Seven empties. While the rest of the City recovers from the Pandemic, the “successful” 14th Street Busway has turned 14th Street into a desolate street, and business after business continues to fail. No one ever studied whether the banning of turns on and off of 14th Street, and the reversal of the University between 13th and 14th, would have been enough to eliminate the congestion which slowed buses. Nor has anyone explained why the program is in effect from 5am to 10pm seven days a week. The impact on businesses all along the route is a sad story.

  • The Story of Rupert & Lulu
Rupert Pupkin and Lulu Bean both hail from the great state of Texas, arriving one year apart via a rescue group called Peyton’s Safe Haven. They’re Heelers born to herd, manage, supervise, and occasionally micromanage ─ and they take this responsibility very, very seriously.
