BRIAN PAPE’S SCENE FROM THE STREET: Norman Buchbinder
My sister Lori Buchbinder & myself would like to thank you for mentioning our wonderful dad Norman Buchbinder in your recent article about the new construction on 8th Street and MacDougal.

He truly was a visionary to see that 8th Street could become one of the streets to bring a lot of people together by starting the 8th Street Bid a/k/a The Village Alliance. We were honored that he has a street named after him.

Our office is at One Union Square West which he bought in 1958. He also had a vision to see that 14th Street also could become a viable place. He also was a founding member of the 14th Street Bid now known as The Union Square Partnership .

Thank you again for mentioning his name and to allow me to talk about our amazing DAD. Thank you.

“Slow Your Roll”? That’s your solution?
“…make biking safer” with a public awareness campaign? What a joke. Protected bike lanes? — so seniors and disabled now have to stand in the middle of the street/avenue to see if the bus is coming or to avoid bikers speeding in the protected lane as we cross the street?

NYC has given riders hundreds of miles of lanes and what did we get in return – 101 pedestrian deaths in 2023 AND the highest number of biker fatalities. Can you say deBlasio’s zero vision?

There is only one solution: license plates displayed on ALL two-wheeled vehicles— pedal bikes, e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, Citibikes—so red light cameras can capture riders and they can be fined, their bikes confiscated and arrests made. Citibike has trackers on their fleet, I’m sure; they can ID who’s speeding/running red lights. Use that info. You want a “more inclusive urban environment?” Make these rogue bikers obey the rules of the road!
