VV’s Astro-Zodial Elucidictions

OCTOBER 2023, Libra/Scorpio

A peer into the Sleepy Hollow-crystal ball shows some frothy Air and Water signs—pumpkin-pie-spice cappuccino?—as a stinger hangs in the balance. Beware the honeybee, and be alert to sewing bee needle pricks. (A century ago, tetanus—or “lock-jaw”—was a known killer… now it’s just a key-reminder to stay up-to-date on vaccinations.)

October 2nd Sting—“Spirits in the Material World” (Ghost in the Machine)… don’t call the Police!—turns 72. (Oh, how we date.)

October 24th pick out your pumpkin at Abingdon Sq (then carve and return it for their annual Halloween display). Hew one for Village author Washington Irving, who unintentionally popularized the jack-o’-lantern for All Hallows’ Eve—while staying on Commerce Street. (Praised be the power of books!)

October 28th spend the Hunter’s Full Moon hunting ghosts! Starting Friday the 13th, and continuing over the next two weekends, the Merchant’s House Museum at 29 East 4th Street—home to the Tredwell family for a century—is hosting Candlelight Ghost Tours. Tread well and watch out for floating ectoplasmic scorpions! http://www.merchantshouse.org

Soothe your soul, and improve the spirits, with a fresh batch of Stinging Nettle soup. (Though this Scottish specialty is usually spring-time fare, the farmers at Juquilita Farm—Friday’s at Union Square market—will harvest nettles into the fall. Grandpa Farm, on Weds & Sat, may still carry them then too. Lucky you!)

Until next month,
your jaundiced eye in the sky,
